Oppo A12 Philippines: Display & Design Review
Despite being offered at very affordable pricing, the OPPO A12 still has a pretty attractive design. On the front, it gets a 6.22” HD+ display with a water-drop notch at the top that accommodates a front-facing camera. The side bezels are relatively thick, but that is pretty much the same for other smartphones at the price point. The feature that makes it stand out in the segment is its diamond-cut edge design. The plastic body is a bit of a letdown, but you can’t ask too much from such a cheap smartphone.
The volume rocker and SIM tray are placed on the left side. Meanwhile, we found a power button on the right side of the phone. There is a headphone jack at the bottom edge along with a USB-C port, which is pretty rare in the budget segment. Overall, we are quite happy with the look of this phone and it is pretty comfortable to hold the phone on hands.
The 6.22” display is not that large compared to the current standard, but the smaller size helps the phone fits well in my hands. With a peak brightness of 450 nits, the display is bright when using indoors, but it gets much worse in direct sunlight. The color reproduction is not that good, but still enough for watching movies or playing games. You can use the Night Shield feature to prevent eye strain when using it in low-light conditions. Unfortunately, the phone doesn’t have Widevine L1 DRM certification so you can’t enjoy HD streaming on Amazon Prime Video or Netflix.
Oppo A12: Performance Review
Powering the OPPO A12 is an octa-core Helio P35 chipset. Users can choose between two memory configurations, 3GB RAM + 32GB storage and 4GB RAM + 64GB storage. OPPO also offers users a microSD card slot to further expand the phone’s storage (up to 256GB). Playing Call of Duty: Mobile or PUBG Mobile is still possible with this phone. However, the experience won’t be good and the phone will get heated up pretty quickly.
The two photos below are the benchmark results of the OPPO A12:
While gaming isn’t OPPO A12’s strong suit, it is pretty good at handling multitasking and day-to-day tasks. It boots Android 9-based ColorOS 6.1 out of the box. Sadly, there is still no announcement regarding its Android 10 update. It comes with some pre-installed apps that you rarely need, but you can uninstall them easily.
It feels smooth when I switch between apps, but it gets slower when check Facebook or Instagram feeds or scrolling for apps. Are you willing to get this phone when the OPPO A12 price Philippines starts at Php 5,299?
Oppo A12: Camera Review
The OPPO A12’s camera setup includes a 13MP main camera and a 2MP unit. They deliver photos with a pretty good amount of detail and color reproduction. Photos in daylight were crisp and full of details. However, things get much worse when it comes to low-light photography. The results look full of noise and you might have to wait for a long time to get a decent shot. Yes, it is disappointing, but you won’t find a smartphone with good low-light capability in this price range.
As for video recording, OPPO A12 is capable of recording Full-HD+ video at 30fps and the video quality is decent. On the front, it gets a single 5MP camera for picturing selfies and video calls. The selfie shots are not too bad, but one thing I don’t like is the lack of details. I don’t really understand why OPPO still goes for a dual-camera cluster inside the OPPO A12, while the competition is already full of smartphones with triple or quad rear cameras.
Oppo A12: Battery Review
The OPPO A12 is fueled by a 4,230mAh battery that only charges at 10W. The battery can last the whole day for medium usage, thanks to the power-saving CPU and HD+ display. However, charging is very slow as there is no fast charging included with the smartphone. Therefore, you might need to charge the phone before going to bed.
Oppo A12 Price Philippines Specs: Verdict
In the price range of the OPPO A12, there are plenty of options that are up for sales with a better display, better cameras, slightly more powerful performance, and Android 10. For example, for a similar price, you can get the Realme 5 or Redmi Note 8, both of which are equipped with a quad-camera lens setup. Meanwhile, the Realme Narzo 10a comes with triple rear cameras and an Helio G70 chipset, which is certainly more powerful than the Helio P35.
